Re: High School Football
Lee_fan, with all of the talks & arguments concerning Appalachia consolidating with P.V. Appy considered everything [sporting events, academics, etc]my point is this, if Lee fans ,parents etc should have stood on their tip toes & argued their points. It possibly may have changed some things. I doubt it because big wheels are going to do what they want to. It made a difference in appy,When it comes voting time, change your represntative around. That is what happened in Wise Co. They [Lee co. big wheels} wanted a new school & they got it. This is only an opinion from someone that knows very little about Lee co. & their school board. My opinion is that their must have been a public hearing on the matter. In other words Lee Co. made their bed now lay in it.If they would rather play AA ball start a petition & get it rolling. You [Lee_ fan] should be the first name on the list. & besides that this is the L.P.D. forum. By the way my blood is blue & gold I'm from Appalachia. One of Appalachia's worst seasons was when they went 1&9. You guessed it they beat Lee Co. .For years Lee co. was a cheerleading camp. Ha Ha just kidding. Re: High School Football
I just want to see Appy and PV football and others around the LPD get back to where they were in the late 70's and early 80's and the mid and late 90's.
That domination type of football. And the players who just went out and got it done. We haven't had that in awhile in the whole LPD.
Last team to do that was GC in 2003. Dominated the district and then won the state title in a very convincing manner.
It's time LPD and LPD football players. You want to be called state champs. Well it starts in August and ends in December.
To the victor goes the spoils and a state title and a ring.
Use to be a hunger for it. Where is it at now and who wants it?

Re: High School Football
I think alot of the fall-off of LPD football has been the change in philosophy. This used to be a place for smash mouth, man on man football. Now alot of the teams known for that have gone to finesse. PV with the spread, Burton with all that jet sweep, etc. Just cuz someone upstate runs that stuff doesn't mean it's better. Really, it makes the whole team more passive cuz in practice they are taught less physical blocking techniques and if the 1st Offense is runnin that crap all the time, a young underclassman isn't getting his nose hardened on 2nd D. In addition, players don't prepare like they used to, but that's hard to do sittin on ur @$$ in front of the playstation in the A/C all summer. The kids just aren't as tough as they were even 10 years ago. I've always believed that if you physically whip your opponent, it will translate on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, there isn't much physical whippin goin on these days.

Re: High School Football
Does a school get more athletic money from the state for playing up? I know many of the inner city schools in Richmond play AAA when they have AA and A numbers.

Re: High School Football
I don't see why Lee fans would've stood against it when changes were indeed needed. I liked what they did for the most part.
And yes, play AA, but again, NOT in the SWD, which is where they would have to play.

Re: High School Football
You know what man, send some of Lee's students to TW, enough to make them about equal sized schools and rename them Lee West Pioneers and Lee East Generals. Problem solved!!!

Re: High School Football
That was the original plan. They were going to build a new school west of Jonesville towards Rose Hill and a new one somewhere near Pennington and send all the students in Jonesville and Thomas Walker area to one and all the students in the Pennington area to the other which would have made both schools have single A numbers. Thomas Walker, however, blocked the proposal and thus they built Lee High.

Re: High School Football
the teams upstate have gotten bigger and stronger, if PV would have ran the I against Giles, they would not have gotten positive yardage, what little they did. If it werent for the change at Burton, Burton would still be Burton gettin pounded by Appalachia. They changed and left the Dawgs in the dust.

Re: High School Football
Yeah..that's true. When you play a finesse game you can beat teams that don't have athletes as fast or skilled as you. But, teams upstate have always been notorious for a slew of excellent athletes. Those teams can be beat by a good ground game and brutal hits. The teams from this region have not historically matched up athlete for athlete with the teams upstate. But there is a reason that this region has won more state championships than any other...it is PHYSICAL play. Wanna wonder why Giles beat PV...they were more PHYSICAL. Wanna know why region d hasn't won a state championship since GC in 2003...Cuz we're not PHYSICAL enough to beat the teams upstate with superior finesse...It's tested and it's proven...if you want to be a state champion, you have to physically whip the other team...after all..how many finesse state champions from region d can you name? I can't name one, and i've been around a long time. If PV had run the I and the option, they would have fared better cuz their line would have been in a 3 pt. stance since 2 a days firing off instead of tryin to catch...it's been done there before with less talent than what this year's team had...and Burton may beat Appy, but that's doesn't mean diddly come game 14 cuz Appy ain't there. With Norton's athletes in the past 2-3 years, they would have beaten Appy anyways. It's not that the teams upstate are better that they ever were, or bigger than they ever were, or faster than they ever were...it's just teams from this region have lost the focus of what has always proven to overcome the teams upstate. After all, as I sat at JMU watchin the Burton game one thing I noticed was that the traditional roles were reversed. Riverheads was way more physical than Burton...and it cost them the title. If you want to see a talented team as far as athletes go look up Central Lunenburg in 89 & 90. All the athletes in the world, physically whipped by a bunch of hard nosed Vikes. BTW, Central still had the 3rd highest amount of passing yards in a state final in the 1990 game (and still stands as 3rd best EVER) and still lost by 14. Go figure. The teams I've seen upstate in the past 3-4 years couldn't carry Central's jock.
